Creation Care Weekend 2008
The Creation Care Weekend (14-16 November 2008) started with a celebration of creation and creativity on Firday night, follwed by a Creation care Symposium on Saturday and Sunday inlcuded worship and sermons on the theme as well as wonderful, appropriate outings.
It achieved far more than the intended objectives which included a celebration of God’s creation and an awakening of our responsibility to care for creation as an expression of our discipleship. The overriding message was a call to take action because, as Duncan reminded us, we would need two and half planets to enable all humanity to consume natural resources at the levels we have grown accustomed to. We were truly blessed to have a speaker of the calibre of Sir Ghillean Prance but we also enjoyed the voices and expressions from our own congregation of professional and ordinary creation carers alike. Sir Ghillean echoed the call to action;
-
because the bible teaches stewardship of creation,
-
because it is the poor who suffer the most and
-
because it is Christ’s creation (Colossians 1:16)
The Saturday Symposium ended with these questions;
-
What would Cape Town look like as an environmentally sustainable city that you would like to live in?
-
What three actions could you commit to this summertime?
-
How can Christ Church move forward?
Caring for creation was demystified and the creator was glorified. By encouraging creativity and local industry, a true sense of community was expressed. It is for this reason that a very big thank you must go to the many people who worked to make it such a success, including members of the congregation who participated with open hearts.
Creation Care pages will continue to be updated on this website to begin to provide access to information on creation and environmental issues, including how to reduce, reuse and recycle as a congregation and as individuals.
There are many practical things we can do that will have a significant benefit. The sermons from the weekend can be downloaded from the website but a CD will be made available of all the material from the weekend.
Christchurch will join A Rocha as a congregation and corporate expressions of creation care will be nurtured and taken up.
