Useful “Green” Webpages

This list of useful websites covers a range of topics that relate to caring for creation. It is by no means exhaustive. Please suggest others that you have found useful and I will update this page.   1. Anglican Diocese of Cape Town Resource page. Engaging with the environment section - A season of creation is a resource book on environmental issues: dealing with biodiversity, water, land, climate change, need not greed and stewardship.
  2. A Rocha international - A Rocha is a Christian nature conservation organisation, the name coming from the Portuguese for “the Rock”
  3. A Rocha South Africa – The South African chapter of A Rocha.
  4. Biodiversity Explorer is a website devoted to showing and explaining the diversity, biology and interactions of life in southern Africa (south of the Kuneni and Zambezi rivers).
  5. Use Blackle, a black version of Google, to save small amounts of energy when using a search enegine on the internet. Blackle also has an interesting list of Energy Saving Tips to get you started on saving energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.
  6. CAPE – Cape Action for People and the Environment. A government programme with support from international donors to protect the rich biological heritage of the Cape Floristic Region.
  7. Nici Alexander (from our congregation) and Alex Hetherington recently started Carbon Calculated. They do carbon footprinting for companies as well as interpretation reports and suggest ways in which companies can reduce their carbon footprints.
  8. Climate Change – why should a person of faith be concerned?

    • UNFCCC – United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
  9. DEAT – Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism

The Earth Charter Initiative, is a brilliant website and includes the Earth Charter compiled by people from more than 78 countries over 12 years, provides us with guidelines for implementing our Christian values. It outlines a system of global ethics that incorporates contemporary science, international law & the insights of philosophy & religion.
  11. Eco-congregation is a tool to help churches begin to address environmental issues in all that they do. It is suitable for all kinds of churches to use. Churches are encouraged to use the resources provided to look at three main areas of church life:
    • ’spiritual’: worship and teaching (this might include services, preaching, work with children and young people, small groups)
    • practical: things to do with buildings, land and church management
    • mission: reaching out to the local and/or global community

  13. The City of Cape Town’s Environmental Resource Management page if brimming with ideas and handy information. Check out the tab marked “Smart Living Handbook” for lekker local green tips. Itis a practical sustainability guide for people and households in Cape Town to make their homes safer and to save money, while working to reduce their impact on our precious environment. The book also provides information on key environmental resource issues facing us globally, and within our City.
  14. Geyser Duvet CC sells electric geyser and pipe insulation which should payback in 12 months. Contact Barry Matthew from our congregation.
  15. Global Warming Solutions – this is a commercial webiste for a company based in Fishoek that distributes and installs green solutions and verifies standards on energy saving products. The site has a nifty page with a map of each city in South Africa showing companies and organisations interested in global warming issues.
  16. Greenworks is a brilliant South African website that provides tips and suggestions on how we can make a difference to the state of our Planet. It includes a Daily Green Checklist, sign up for green tips of the week and much more.
  17. GreenHome – 100% Biodegradable food packaging including bags, boxes, bowls, plates, utensils, unbleached toilet paper and what looks like “plastic sandwich bags”. They are around the corner in Harfield Village.
  18. SAFCEI – South African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute is a multi-faith institute, united in diveristy through a common commitment to earthkeeping. Their aim is to support the faith communities in fulfilling their environmental and socio-economic responsibility.
  19. Practical Tips on saving energy and recycling, visit these websites:
  20. The Johannesburg Anglican Environmental Initiative, or JAEI is a formal body of the Diocese of Johannesburg, seeking to meet the challenges being faced by this generation with regards to the environment. They believe it is God’s will that we look after this precious planet we call home.
  21. Black balloons – an amazing video clip on Carbon Emissions from households. This ad brings to life the contribution that each household is making towards climate change and demonstrates some very easy ways to help reduce it while saving money.
  22. Cape Town has its very own Green Map! Visit http://www.capetowngreenmap.co.za to make greener lifestyle choices and experience the Mother City’s wealth of sustainable resources. The interactive map enables you to explore Cape Town’s green spaces, nature reserves, organic eateries, farmers’ markets, recycling drop-offs, sustainable living projects, eco products and other green choices by clicking the map’s icons.
  23. urban sprout is a growing blog-style online community, featuring daily green blogs, events and a directory that focuses on organic and eco-friendly products.
