Baptism is the Sacrament of Initiation. It is an outward sign of God’s grace in our lives by which we are welcomed into the family of the Church, the company of all faithful believers. It is always a delight to baptize those who have recently come to faith, as well as the infant children of Christian parents who make the promises on behalf of their children and renew their own commitment to Jesus at same time. Some parents prefer to delay baptism until their child has made a personal commitment to Christ. In this case we give thanks publicly for the birth of their child as they dedicate themselves to seeing that the child comes to faith and so to baptism.

Confirmation is the public declaration of those who have been baptized that they confirm the promises made on their behalf by their parents and god-parents. At this service they bear witness to that commitment as the Bishop leads us in prayer that they be filled with the Holy Spirit for worship, witness and service.

When baptizing adults we prefer to do this by full immersion. It is a powerful symbol of dieing to self and rising again to new life in Jesus. When we baptize infants we pour water over their foreheads. This too is a powerful symbol of the washing away of sin. Both washing (Acts 22:16) and death and resurrection (Romans 6:4) are rich images used in Scripture of baptism.
